  • Costa Calma greeted us with a long palm avenue. At the wasp waist of Fuerteventura, Germans in particular spend their beach holidays. The resort was once built for tourism and you can see this immediately, because hotels and holiday apartments characterize the image of the village.

Fuerteventura Casino Costa Calma Resort

Dominated by German tourists, Costa Calma is a purpose-built resort town located some 60km south of Fuerteventura’s Airport. The white sand beaches of the Jandia Peninsula begin here in Costa Calma and run almost continuously south to Morro Jable. With beaches a plenty, clear waters and golden-white sand, it’s a sun and beach lover’s gateway to paradise.

The resort, originally called Cañada del Río, took off in the 1980s, developing parallel to a lovely stretch of calm water and white sand. Although the beach may live up to its name, Costa Calma can be very windy! That wind is put to good effect just a little further south along the coast, where, every July, the PWA World Wind-Surfing Championships are held at Playa de Sotavento. This is a great beach to master windsurfing and kitesurfing basics, as a sand spit traps the receding tide, leaving behind a shallow lagoon, perfect for beginners.

Nightlife is a little lacking and there is no ‘town centre’ as such, with shops, bars and restaurants focused around the many shopping/commercial centres, leaving the area a little soulless. Costa Calma lacks a seafront promenade, but instead has several parallel roads and a pedestrian walkway set further back from the sea, amongst a dense plantation of pines and palm trees. In early 2016 a new section of the FV-2 motorway opened, bypassing Costa Calma, resulting in the reduction of through-traffic, further increasing the area’s tranquil appeal.

A short drive north from Costa Calma is Oasis Park, a Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and the largest theme park in the Canary Islands. If you don’t have a car there is a local bus or alternatively tickets including coach transport can be purchased in Hotels and local Travel Agencies.
